How to send and receive private messages/ pm

Recommended Posts

David S. brought this to our attention last week. We ask people to use private messages, or pms, when sharing contact info (email addresses, phone numbers,et), to avoid that information being swept up by spammers, bots, and bad guys. Private messages are just that-- private. Only you, and the intended recipient can see them.

But, some members are new to forums, and our private message system is a multistep process.

To send a message, log in. Then, if the person you would like to pm has a recent post, click on his username anywhere it appears in bold... in a post, at the recent users at the bottom of the page, or even in the "thanked by" section at the bottom of a post.

Clicking on the username will take you to the user profile, and youll see a gold band with an envelope, and "message." Clicking here will take you to the message box, where you can type your message, proofread, and hit send.

Or, using the dropdown box, click on the three bars by the Oliver heading in the blue box, click on search members, and type in the username. Then click on search. Hopefully, you will see the recipient's profile. Click on the gold message envelope in his profile, and continue on as above.

I added a few screenshots in the next post below as visual aids.

Receiving, and retrieving, a private message is pretty straightforward. Log in. If you have a message, or some other notifications, the bell in the bottom corner of the main page will have a red dot. Click on the bell. You'll be taken to your own profile page. Messages that you haven't read will show up as usernames, highlighted on gold. Click on the username, and you'll see the message.

To receive notification on the bell when you have a new message, click on "account" at the very top of the forum page, above the big blue Oliver stripe. Click on web notifications, and mark the box next to "when someone sends me a private message. " To receive email notifications, click on email notification, and check the box "when someone sends me a private message." You will only receive email notifications if you have not been logged in within an hour of receiving a new message. It's a good practice to mark both boxes if you don't check into the forum daily, but it's your choice.

I really recommend turning on private message/ pm notifications if you are selling, or trying to buy a trailer or anything else in classifieds.

A few visual aids, again...

The way email notifications for pms work is:

If you have not been logged in for more than 1 hour = sends email notification for pms.

If you are logged in or have been logged in within the last 1 hour = no email notification for pms.

There is a little button at the very bottom of your Messages page called Download Chats History. I just discovered it. You get an unformatted text file showing all the conversations. I am not sure why you might want to do that.......?

Does anybody use this feature, and why? Am I missing out on something useful?

Thanks,

It's a nice feature for people who use private messaging a lot. You can download history, and delete old messages without losing the info.

Not a big deal for light users. There is a limit to stored messages. In the old dsys, it was 100. I think it's a lot more, now.
